CHARACTER CREATION GUIDE
This is a guide to assist with writing the character sheet for the game. There will be other areas of explanation as well. This game uses inspiration from the Marvel RPG created back in the 80s and 90s, as well as home-brew Stats and rules. Please Note: Players wishing to play characters with lesser starting attributes (like children and the elderly), or greater (like Super aliens and lesser deities), will need to discuss it with a Game-Master (GM) first.
ATTRIBUTES AND RANKS
First a few terms: Attributes are your physical statistics, such as your F.A.S.E. (Fighting, Agility, Strength, Endurance), and your R.I.P. (Reason, Intuition, and Psyche). They are explained below. Ranks are the name and numeric value for each level of an Attribute. When asked what your Fighting score is, for example, you could say 'Excellent', if that is the correct Rank rating. Your attributes are defined mostly by your Origin. Each Origin will provide an Average statistic to manipulate to your preference. A link to the Origin powers is available here, and repeatedly down below, throughout the Origin instructions down below. Here are some general rules of thumb.
| SHIFT-0 FEEBLE POOR TYPICAL GOOD EXCELLENT REMARKABLE INCREDIBLE AMAZING MONSTROUS UNEARTHLY SHIFT-X... | 000 002 004 006 010 020 030 040 050 075 100 NO. |
Archetypes define your characters Origin, and FASERIP Attributes. The options include Aliens, Androids, Angels and Demons*, Entities of Great Power*, High-Tech Heroes, 'Normal' Humans, Mutants, and Robots. Each one comes with it's own variation of FASERIP Rank averages, the number of Contacts a hero might have, and the number of Powers a hero might start with.
CONTACTS
Contacts are people the character knows , who can vouch for, or do favors for them. The hero starts out with two they can invent and suggest, for free, at the start, and may gain more from Skill Selection, and from either RP or extraneous future Karma point purchases, in game. One example of a standard Contact is "Aunt May"... with or without her bridge club. There is no difference in price between that as a contact, and either "The N.Y.P.D." or "SHIELD," however one might be required to explain why Joe Nobody knows Nick Fury... which might be worth a plot or two itself. More options for specific Contacts will be forthcoming.
TALENTS
Talents are skills, hobbies, interesting quirks and such that your character either knows or 'has'. Engineering is a skill, and so is 'Trivia', representing a wide range of worth, mostly determined by the flavor of character the player is going for. A link to the talent page is above this informational blurb. Characters start out with 6 talents. Extra skills can be gained by being sub-attachments to other skills (Law Enforcement for example, will give you additional skills such as 'Law' and 'Guns').
BOOK-KEEPING
HEALTH (Fighting + Agility + Strength + Endurance)
Health is your character's basic Hit Points, of which you regain your Endurance-rating's worth of, after a day or so of rest. When reduced to zero, the character is considered knocked out. If it goes below 0 to, say, Negative-your-Endurance rating, then the character is normally considered dead-ish.
MENTAL HEALTH - (Reasoning + Intuition + Psyche)
Mental Health is your character's mental fortitude and well being. Though attacks that target your Mental Health are not common, when your Mental Health is in the negatives, you are unconscious or in a coma.
KARMA - (Equal to Mental Health Rating, or ones RIP... to start). KARMA points are awarded or deducted by an Op or Storyteller through the course of a given story, length of time, or action done by the one's character. Karma can go up or down, though only criminals can benefit from negative Karma.
* Spending 100 Karma Points may allow you the chance to be given a re-roll OR you can declare you wish to spend them to go up one color shift if you fail a roll badly so it is not a botch.
POPULARITY - Your popularity in the world, recognition and such. You can go negative with this which means you are rather not liked. New heroes with a secret identity tend to start off regularly with low popularity unless they have purchased bonus popularity during character creation -AND- their alter egos have a well known name such as being an actress, business tycoon, god, media personality, etc.
*Generating Popularity: Initial Popularity is Good (10) for most heroes, 0 for Mutants and robots. The character may leave it at that, or may raise or lower initial Popularity by the following factors:
-Raise Popularity by +1cs if identity is publicly known
-Lower Popularity by -1cs if identity is secret
-Lower Popularity by -1cs if hero hangs out with known mutants, but is not a mutant
-Lower Popularity by -1cs if hero is generally unpopular (aliens may have this trouble, but a player may choose to have his hero be extra unpopular)
Heroes may start with negative Popularity. This generally means that the alias with the negative Popularity is wanted by the authorities for any number of charges. One can use popularity as a sort of Charisma-check, and it works more or less the same weather it is positive (good popularity: People like you, they really really like you) or negative (Fear and loathing). Using negative Popularity may result in loss of Karma. A secret ID may never start with negative Popularity.
RANK | DESCRIPTION | EXAMPLE |
Feeble | Reclusive, little known. | Archangel |
Poor | Known to law enforcement (neutral) | Banshee |
Typical | Known to local populace | Cyclops |
Good | Liked by law enforcement | Daredevil |
Excellent | Known to mass media | Beast |
Remarkable | Liked by general public | Spider-Man |
Incredible | Liked by mass media | Captain Britain |
Amazing | Megastar | Hercules, Oprah |
Monstrous | Living Legend | Thor |
Unearthly | Living Icon | Captain America |
RESOURCES - This represents the amount of money a person makes in a year, the sort of lifestyle they can maintain, and a vague idea of how much money they can lay their hands on at any reasonable time. This rating scales up almost exponentially, so for the average character, availability of resource rankings ends at Incredible, with a few 'lucky' people having an Amazing rank, which means that they are roughly as rich as a 'small' wealthy country. In truth, however, 'almost' no one will be richer then Tony Stark (Incredible). Characters start off with a resource rating of Typical (Ty) or less, depending on the origin.
RANK | DESCRIPTION | EXAMPLE |
Feeble | Unemployed, fixed income. | Aunt May |
Poor | Freelancers, students | Peter Parker |
Typical | Salaried employment | You know who you are. |
Good | Professional, middle class | Teacher's Pay at Xavier Mansion. |
Excellent | Small business, Avengers' pay | Most Avengers who aren't Iron-Man or The Panther |
Remarkable | Small corporation, Multi-Millionaire | Warren Worthington (Angel) |
Incredible | Large Corporation, Multi-Billionaire | Tony Stark |
Amazing | Incredibly Large Corporation, Small country | The Panther, Dr. Doom |
POWERS (finally!!)
The link to the power page is above. Powers are fairly straight forward. The character gets four to start, not counting any additions or subtractions due to origin or race (See the Origin page), at an attribute rating of Remarkable (Rm). Some powers (such as Invulnerability, Mind Control, Regeneration and Teleportation), count as two power selections. Players may look to the Power Pages as a guide as to the range of what might be a good idea for powers. However in the end it is up to the player to gain a power by describing as close as possible, what their power does. The GM/Operator will be the final arbitrator of what is and isn't allowed as a power.
CHARACTER SHEET
This is the standard character sheet for the #Comic-OOC channel. If something is missing from your character sheet, please feel free to write it in. The 'Notes' section, shown and mentioned below. is a good place to do so. Go to this page to get access to the Character Sheet. Do not cut and paste the the nice and neat initial character sheet, that is just an example of what the basic format will look like on your Roster thread. Instead cut and paste the ugly BBCcode page below the triple bar. Another copy of that BBCcode nastiness is also below.
